Diversity is otherness, that is different from our own and outside the group to which we belong, yet present in other individuals and groups. It includes the uniqueness of individuals and relationships between values, social identity, experiences and organizational culture. The Diversity Unit is led by a Director and its main function is to Mainstream Diversity issues in the government structures and existing instruments such as policies, regulations, laws and programs. 

Specifically, the Unit performs the following tasks: 

  • Design diversity programmes and oversee their implementation in MDAs, RSs and LGAs, 
  • Facilitate gender focal points/diversity champions in MDAs, RSs and LGAs;
  • Manage gender capacity building fund;
  • Mainstream diversity issues in the Public Service;
  • Coordinate HIV and AIDS programmes in MDAs, RSs and LGAs;
  • Review circulars, regulations and policies to encompass diversity issues;
  • Formulate gender/diversity perspective guidelines for policy implementation;
  • Facilitate HIV and AIDS coordinators in MDAs, RSs and LGAs
  • Monitor implementation of HIV and AIDS programmes in MDAs, RSs and LGAs;
  • Address issues pertaining to people with disabilities in the public service;
  • Maintain and update database for women public servants;
  • Monitor and evaluate diversity specific initiatives and provide counseling for public servants.
