Access policy
Access to the records / archives is governed by a thirty year rule, with the exception of classified documents. That means, after the expiration of a period of thirty years from the date of creation, records can be available for public inspection.
The procedures to be followed are:
Tanzanian Citizens
An application letter requesting access must be supplied. For civil servants, the letter should be issued from place of work.
For others, the letter should come from the Local Authority.
Foreign nationals
For access for long-term research (one year or longer) a research permit must be obtained from the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH).
For access on a short term basis a letter of application must be submitted by the researcher’s institution, office, or embassy.
Search room opening hours
The search room is open from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm, Monday to Friday. No services during weekends and holidays.
